Kestrel Labs co-founders Marian Pulford and Austin Pulford will speak at the Texas A&M University College of Architecture AI symposium, AI Across the AEC Industry: Data to Design, held October 5-6 at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center in College Station, Texas.
The symposium deliberately pairs academic researchers with industry practitioners to examine how AI is changing research, design, and building practice across architecture, engineering, and construction. Keynotes come from Phillip Bernstein, Deputy Dean of the Yale School of Architecture and former Autodesk vice president, and Burçin Becerik-Gerber, Director of the Center for Intelligent Environments at USC.
Their session, "AI, Automation, and Agency: What Must Be Left to the Architect?", takes on the question underneath every AI conversation in this industry: which tasks belong to machines, and which decisions demand human expertise. Using Kestrel's work in building code compliance as the case study, Marian and Austin will examine the distinct roles that AI, deterministic computation, and professional judgment each play in the design process, and why responsibility, interpretation, and judgment must remain with the architect.
